INTRODUCTION
Good retail design is all about an experience which is created by the designer using components, that are interprets of the brand in the space provided.
“Retail Design” is a methodology of defining space through organization, and offering a sequential experience to the user.
The objective of the studio was to understand and build “a new normal” through design in these pandemic times.
CASE STUDY
The participants of the studio were asked to select an apparel (clothing) brand of their choice. With respect to the selection, they were asked to study the brand for its identity that was there in the market, along with the age group and the social strata it catered to and its U.S.P.
Further on, the student needed to identify a garment racking system that he or she could ‘remodify’, for the pandemic times, at the same time also keeping in mind that it should serve the same and equal purpose during the normal times.
The modified rack was also to be a part of the layout for the new retail outlet design.
SITE STUDY AND OBJECTIVES
The site is an existing retail outlet in the clothing district of Vadodara. It is linear in nature and is divided into two areas, covered and non-covered providing equal opportunity to work on the interior as well as the exterior, making this exercise open ended to resolving both.
Treatment of the façade was also a big part of the design process giving the students the opportunity to work on double-storey canvas, for the façade.
The students were required to submit a retail outlet which was an interpretation of their thoughts as to how the company should be showcased.
