“Shape clay into a vessel; It is the space within that makes it useful. Cut doors and windows for a room, it is the holes which make it useful. Therefore, benefit comes from what is there; Usefulness from what is not there.” ― Lao Tzu
Dwelling is the primary form of architectural and design exploration and expression. Dwellings are designed for specific individuals and families, yet they can reveal the designer’s interpretation of the relationship between the individual and the collective, between humans and nature, as well as the designer’s idea of order in space and time.
The studio has strived to elaborate upon the psychology, behavior and preferences of the defined character at a larger scale and has been explored on the theme of ‘Spaces for Dwellings.’
Through the studio we tried to explore the intricacies and complexities of designing living spaces, and the powerful role of a designer in shaping human lives; by combining real-life material knowledge along with abstract, intangible requirements.
Interpreting THE CASE STUDY (A MOVIE / SITCOM) and designing for the LEAD PROTAGONIST in the given context (taking the specific case of a state transport bus)
Students were asked to watch the movie / sitcom and asked to interpret the character and its surroundings. Based on the observations, they made a brief and designed a MOBILE RESIDENCE for the particular movie character.
Students were given the context of a S.T. Bus and asked to convert it into a mobile home complete with a living, cooking – dining, sleeping space and areas characteristic of their chosen character.
Buses typically have a small allotment of space per person, the designed space needs to be precise in DETAIL, MATERIALITY AND EFFICIENCY. This allowed the students to understand the idea of “DESIGNING IN TIGHT SPACES”
Because these spaces were mobile and housed PEOPLE WHILE IN MOTION, sensitivity towards designing the STABILITY, SAFETY AND COMFORT of the passengers was a must.
The design of mobile interiors also influenced the way one perceived the exterior environments beyond and how one experienced that larger environment with fellow travelers.
This Studio was keeping with the covid-19 situation in mind, and promoting the idea of mobility with SOCIAL DISTANCING.
